2/5/2012 - SUNDAY - BRETT'S REPORT
2/7/2012

Another day on the lake fishing has slowed a bit still taking small amounts of big perch on blues.
Very windy on the lake right now.
Ice is holding well in the bay here at Aloha over a foot of ice remains.

The snowmobiling trailS aren't fairing so well as you can see in the photo but you can't miss our sign on the trail.

CONDITIONS ARE STILL GOOD AT ALOHA
2/4/2012

They are picking up some nice perch in 29 to 40 ft of water.

Still plenty of room for parking and Porty-Poty is close to to day use parking area that is open this year courtesy of Aloha State Park

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK THE BOX FOR THE STATE PARK PASSPORT "P" ON YOUR LICENSE TAB - only $10 for the whole year.

STURGEON SEASON FOR 2012 IS OVER
2/4/2012

It was a beauty of an opening morning for sturgeon, good sunrise and 17 degrees.

You could hear the ice rumble, that means it's making ice.

But once again the seasons over before noon on the first day.

But that doesn't stop the fishing on Mullett Lake - plenty of anglers here and the ice is still good for snowmobiles and atv's.

And yes even the boys in blue appreciate the porta john.

BRETT'S REPORT TUESDAY JAN 31 2012
1/31/2012

Snowmobiling has come to a grinding halt again.
Ice fishing goes on even as some fisherman are preparing for the Sturgeon season on Black Lake.
Catches of Perch seem to be better in the evening right now. The ice seems to holding its own.

SEE STURGEON INFO UNDER BLOG JAN 15

1/29/2012 - BRETT'S REPORT - SUNDAY JAN 29 2012
1/29/2012

Not much has changed for snowmobiling and in ice conditions. However there are some soft spots out in the middle of the lake being reported. Perch are being caught but not in great numbers yet. Shacks are starting to pop up all over in search of the hot spot. Walleye are slow and some good
size Pike are being taken.

BRETT'S REPORT FRIDAY JAN 27 2012 7:28pm
1/28/2012

Ice reports are good plenty of ice for atv and snowmobile traffic. Need more snow for trails some is forecast for tonight we will see. Fishing reports are mixed pike are still doing well perch have been reported sporadic but those that have found them are pleased with the size, some 14 inch to 19 inch have been hitting on blues. Reports have been from a
few fish to better that 20. Fisherman are starting to comb the lake so more reports should be coming in soon.

BRETT'S REPORT TUESDAY - JAN 24 2012
1/24/2012

We lost a lot of snow pack yesterday with the rain and warm temps but have picked up 2-3 inches of new snow overnight. With the flip flop in temps and rain it's put a lot of water and slush on the ice. Despite tough conditions fishing is still going on perch are slow pike action is pretty good but it is windy on the lake and about 25 degrees. Their are scattered snow showers.

BRETT'S REPORT SUNDAY JAN 22 2012
1/22/2012

Plenty of ice fishing going on today on Mullet lake.
Reports of Pike and perch being taken with walleye being slow right now. Most anglers are searching for that spot. Some are trying familiar ground.

Weather is perfect little wind and a balmy 23 degrees with overcast sky's

Ice conditions are good on the north end of the lake with approx 10 inches while the south end has reports of 4-6 inches with more ice in the bays.

SOO LOCKS CLOSES FOR SEASON - REOPEN MARCH 25
1/21/2012

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District announces the seasonal closing of the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The Corps operates and maintains the locks as part of the Great Lakes navigation system and will use this time to perform critical maintenance on the lock structures.

The season's final vessel, the Saginaw, a 639-foot long self-unloading bulk carrier, cleared the Poe Lock just at midnight January 19.

During the 2011 navigation season, 4,040 cargo vessels passed through the Soo Locks carrying almost 75 million tons of iron ore, coal, grain and other commodities. In addition to cargo vessels, a total of 3,175 tour boats, private boats and other ‘recreational' vessels used the locks this past year.

"The Locks are the linchpin of the Great Lakes navigation system, facilitating the transport of important commodities," said Lt. Col. Michael Derosier, district engineer. "We are proud of our responsibilities to operate and maintain the locks."

While closed to navigation for the next two months, crews will be busy with a variety of maintenance projects on both the Poe and MacArthur Locks in preparation for another busy season.

The Poe stayed open three days past the traditional closing date of the navigation season, at the request of the shipping industry, allowing the movement of over 400,000 tons of additional cargo. The locks are scheduled to re-open March 25.

there was ice already on the lake there is about 5 inches now and we had a good night of ice building last night. and it is making ice right now it's 14 degrees and the ice is making noise.

FRIDAY JAN 13 - 14 DEGREES & 8 INCHES OF SNOW
1/13/2012

IT'S NOT READY FOR SLEDDING YET, BUT AT LEAST IT'S STARTING TO LOOK LIKE WINTER - TEMPERATURE IS DROPPING - BUT THE ICE IN THE LAKE IS NOT READY FOR SAFE FISHING YET.

ICE IS FORMING
1/10/2012

A BRAVE JOE DRAKE WENT OUT ON THE ICE OFF THE FOOT OF MAIN STREET AND CUT A BLOCK OF ICE TO CHECK THE THICKNESS THIS MORNING ABOUT 11am - HERE IS A PICTURE OF THE BLOCK HE CUT - IT IS 3 1/2 INCHES THICK - SAFE FISHING IS COMING BUT NOT QUITE YET - THERE IS STILL A LOT OF OPEN WATER IN THE LAKE AND ACCORDING TO BRETT THE TEMP IS ABOVE FREEZING (37) TODAY.
WE STILL CAUTION EVERYONE TO BE VERY CAREFUL AND IF YOU VENTURE OUT ON THE ICE IT IS STRICTLY AT YOUR OWN RISK. WE ARE NOT TO DO IT YET. THERE IS ALSO A REPORT WE MAY EVEN GET SOME SNOW ON THE TRAILS BEFORE THE WEEK IS OVER.

MONDAY JANUARY 9 2012 2:20pm

WIND + SNOW + COLD + WHITE-CAPS = TODAYS WEATHER AT ALOHA
4/17/2011

THE SALT TRUCKS ARE OUT AGAIN TODAY JUST ONE DAY AFTER DECLARING THE ICE IS ALL GONE FROM MULLETT LAKE AT ALOHA. WINDS MEAN POWER OUTAGES WHICH WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL OF IN THE LAST FEW DAYS, MOSTLY VERY SHORT AND NOT DURING THE NASCAR RACE OR THE RED WINGS VICTORIES. OK LISA NOT DURING THE TIGERS EITHER. BUT EACH CRAPPY DAY MEANS SUMMER IS ONE DAY CLOSER AND WE ARE ALL READY. THE WONDERFUL SMELL OF FRESH DONUTS MADE BY CHEF BRETT FILL THE STORE AND THEY TASTE REAL GOOD SO COME ON DOWN AND ENJOY ONE. IT IS NOT SUMMER YET HE ONLY MAKES DONUTS ON SPECIAL DAYS - SO CALL FIRST TO MAKE SURE THIS IS ONE OF THOSE DAYS OR ORDER AND PREPAY THE DAY BE.FORE TO BE SURE YOU GET JUST WHAT YOU WANT

4/17/2011

THE ICE IS OUT - GUESS WHO WON
4/16/2011

APRIL 15 2011 AND THE GATES ARE OPEN
4/15/2011

LESS THAN 30 MINUTES AFTER THE GATES WERE UNLOCKED AND OPENED THE FIRST CAR ENTERED TO ENJOY THE VIEW AND WATCH THE GEESE AROUND THE BOAT BASIN - SUMMER CAN'T BE FAR AWAY EVEN IF THE TEMP WAS IN THE MIDDLE 40'S AND FALLING - THE INSPECTION AT NOON TODAY DID DETERMINE THAT THERE WAS STILL A LITTLE ICE BY UNDER THE DOCK SO THE ICE IS NOT YET OUT OF THE LAKE.

WHITE OUT ON THE LAKE TODAY
3/12/2011

Finally we get some snow but the temp is 34 degrees and all shanties have to be off the ice on Tuesday - Most people are getting in a last serious sled ride for the season and Daylight Savings Time starts tomorrow - where did the Winter go? It figures that today we are getting reports of good Perch catches from many of our local fishermen. Hey! it is also time to enter the ICE OUT CONTEST at the ALOHA CAMP STORE - be sure and stop in to put your best guess on the calendar - one entry per person (must be old enough to have a drivers license - that means 16 years old or older) - Last years winning date was April 3rd - This year we are allowing 2 people to pick the same date but still only one entry per person - There is no charge to enter and duplicate prizes will be awarded - You must be here in person to enter. You may enter up to and including March 31 2011 - once you enter you can not change the date.

WE NEED SNOW
2/25/2011

Trails are quiet - no snow left for the groomers to work - Southern Michigan needs to send us some of their snow as this year the snow has deserted our area - We do have some reports of good Perch Fishing on the solid Ice in Mullett Lake. Reports received at our store range from catches of 2 or 3 to one of our most serious fisher "LADIES" who brought her bucket into the store with more that 20 nice ones the largest of which appeared to be over 12" - but she wouldn't tell me when the fish fry was going to be.

MISSING ICE FISHING EQUIPMENT
2/19/2011

Yesterday (Friday February 18) morning a man in a pickup truck was observed picking up equipment that was scattered on the ice from the 40 mph winds that damaged several fishing shanty's during the night & early morning on Mullett Lake between the Village of Aloha and Needle Point. So far no attempt has been made to return this equipment to its owners. If you have any knowledge or information concerning this incident please contact us at the Aloha Camp Store or call 231-625-2552 - Several shanty's were either damaged or destroyed by the day long wind. Some of the remains of one destroyed shanty are seen in this photo being brought in.

JUST ANOTHER WINTER SUNDAY MORNING IN ALOHA
1/30/2011

MINUS 4 DEGREES WHEN I OPENED THE STORE AT 7:45am WITH A BLUE SKY CONTAINING A FEW WHITE CLOUDS AND A VERY BRIGHT SUN COMING UP. A COUPLE BRAVE FISHERMEN WERE ALREADY OUT IN THEIR SHANTY'S - JUST ANOTHER WINTER DAY ON MULLET LAKE - BY NOON IT WAS UP TO 20 DEGREES - SLEDS WERE COMING DOWN THE TRAIL OR ACROSS THE FROZEN LAKE AND STOPPING FOR GAS AND FRESH DONUTS.

ITS COLD AND SNOWING BUT THE FISH ARE BITING
1/22/2011

IT IS COLD, BLOWING & SNOWING BUT THE FISH ARE REALLY BITING. SO IF YOU CAN FIND YOUR SHANTY THROUGH ALL THE BLOWING SNOW AND GET THE HEAT CRANKED UP IT HAS BEEN A GOOD DAY TO DROP A MINNOW DOWN THE HOLE AND FILL YOUR BUCKET. REPORTS TODAY HAVE BEEN SAYING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 30 & 44 FEET OF WATER AND YOU CAN FILL YOUR PAIL WITH NICE 10 INCH PERCH - OR YOU MIGHT EVEN CATCH A NICE 19 INCH STEELHEAD LIKE KAREN DID (see picture under the 2011 photos)
